Teaching Music History does not have to be boring! It can be fun, if you approach it in the right way. The one tool that you really need in a music history class: A stereo system. You have to spend each class listening to music, and have the students start to identify what music comes from what era. The students will have a far greater understanding of music in general if they have the advantage of this early in their musical career. I was only really exposed to classical music later in life, and I missed a great deal in my early life because I wasn’t exposed to this wonderful music. To get an understanding of what it was like in the times of Mozart and Beethoven, where there was no TV, no recording devices or anything and live music was the only way it could be experienced. For students to get an understanding of this is a great gift that we can give them as teachers.
