Leaks that spring on wall hung toilets or fiberglass shower screens should be addressed at the earliest possible opportunity. If left unattended to, these leaks gradually aggravate themselves, causing more damage and costs in the process. In addition, these leaks pose a safety hazard in the bathroom as people can easily slip on pools of water. If you have a problem with a wall hung toilet that has sprung a leak, then try this DIY solution.
Carefully examine the toilet to see where the source of the leak is coming from. Inspect the water supply hose and feel it for any wetness. If water seems to be dripping out of the hose, it probably needs to be replaced. If no sign of damage is detected, then check the base of the toilet to see if there is a leak there. If some water seems to be seeping out, the wax seal is likely to be the culprit.
Locate the water shutoff handle under the toilet and turn in all the way to the right to turn off the water supply. Remove as much water from the bowl as possible by flushing. Use a sponge and a bucket to take care of the rest.
If the water supply hose is the source of the leak, remove it using an adjustable wrench by unscrewing the hose from the bottom of the flush valve in the toilet and the water shutoff. Install the new water supply hose to the same points, and turn the water supply back on.
If the wax seal is the source of leakage, remove the toilet tank from the bowl. In a wall mount toilet, the tank is typically mounted on to the wall and secured to the toilet bowl with bolts on either side of the tank. Use an adjustable wrench to remove these bolts.
Set the bowl upside down on a drop cloth and remove the old wax ring using a putty knife. Clean completely around the flange before setting the new wax ring in place. Replace the bowl and tank, and then turn on the water supply.
